Farrar, Frederic William
(1831–1903)
   Devotional Writer.
   Farrar was educated at the Universities of London and Cambridge, England. Initially he became a school-master and taught at Harrow and Marlborough. Subsequently he became a Canon of Westminster Abbey and in 1895 he was installed as Dean of Canterbury Cathedral. Farrar wrote a very successfui Life of Christ, published in 1874, and a Life and Works of St Paul (1879). He is mainly remembered for his somewhat pious juvenile fiction which includes Eric: Or Little by Little, Julian Home and St Winifred’s, or the Word of the School. These have been both enjoyed and mocked by generations of English adolescents.
